Submarine telecom cables (SSCs) are the backbone of the modern global communications system.
These fibre-optic cables, which stretch thousands of kilometres along the seabed, are in practice responsible for transmitting around 98% of internet, voice and video data between continents. In Portugal, whose geostrategic location is favoured in the interconnection between Europe, Africa and the Americas, its waters are currently crossed by around 10% of all international CSs (this % is expected to grow significantly in the medium term) which are absolutely crucial to the resilience of the global telecommunications network.
